Calabria Pierre-François Sauter

Film index A to Z

José and Jovan work for an undertaker. One day they are assigned the job of transporting a body from Switzerland to Calabria so the deceased can be buried in his home village. The 2000-kilometre trip with the silent passenger in the back of the hearse weighs on the two formally attired workers. Still, the solemn mood is no match for their voluble nature, and they have long conversations about the meaning of life and the weightiness of passing time for a Portuguese or Serbo-Croatian immigrant. From impromptu language lessons to Gypsy songs, snippets of Italian and a passion for Russian violin, this odd and intense road movie is not unlike a coming-of-age tale. A film with mythic qualities, exploring the inner landscapes of a return to the mother country.
