Cinema Novo

Cinema Novo, whose impact is still being felt to this day, is one of Brazil’s most important cinematic movements. In the 1950s and 60s, a generation of young artists invented its own way of making films. They were politicized, mingling art and revolution, and their movies were made with and for ordinary people. Cinema Novo shows us a sampling of the explosion of images created by these bold, unconventional filmmakers. Eryk Rocha’s film is not at all a theoretical piece: it is a brilliantly edited essay that adopts the dynamic movement of the excerpts and archival footage he juxtaposes. It’s a wonderful ride enhanced with captivating music and fascinating interviews. A great introduction to a group of excellent but seldom-seen films.
