Youth Protection Services

Quebec’s child protective services department, the Direction de la protection de la jeunesse (DPJ), is often discussed in the media but its workings remain largely mysterious. After several months observing the DPJ, director Guillaume Sylvestre (Durs à cuire) spent a year inside the department, capturing the social workers’ daily routine in direct-cinema style. How do they balance the need to protect children both physically and psychologically and the ideal of keeping families together? DPJ shows us how the employees cope with one Hobson’s choice after another, forced to make snap decisions that will have irreversible impacts on the children and their parents.

Presented in collaboration with the CSN and Canal D
