Between Fences

They’re smart, funny, lucid, sometimes bitter. They come from Sudan and Eritrea. For seven years, sometimes longer, these refugees have been denied status by the authorities and remained detained in Holot, an Israeli camp deep in the desert, about 20 minutes’ walk from the Egyptian border. It is here in this lawless zone that theatrical director Chen Alon and filmmaker Avi Mograbi set up a theatre workshop in an abandoned building in 2014, inspired by Augusto Boal’s “theatre of the oppressed,” so that the men could tell their stories. Both a terrifying chronicle of a terrible life and inarguable proof of the cathartic and liberating power of art, Mograbi once again forges a new path for an activist, essential cinema.

Presented in collaboration with the CSN and Oxfam-Québec
