Hier à Nyassan Catherine Hébert

Film index A to Z

In Nyassan, Burkina Faso, rice farming structures the lives of hundreds of workers, from harvest to market. Catherine Hébert shows us an ordinary day in the life of the village. From the pre-dawn hours to nightfall, she observes the many tasks involved in growing rice and introduces us to the people who make a living from it. Through her intensely beautiful images, she captures the feel of the place (often shrouded in clouds of dust or steam), the farmers’ patient rhythms and schoolchildren’s routines. Above all, the filmmaker takes an attentive look at the different activities that go into the work, subtly revealing the fragility of the economy and of local knowledge in today’s world.
