Hissein Habré, a Chadian tragedy

Body and soul, they are riddled with deep, permanent scars. All have lived through the horror of the regime of Chadian dictator Hissein Habré, a former rebel leader who took power by force and ruled from 1982 to 1990, with the support of the CIA. After being arrested by Habré’s secret police, they were tortured by men they still see in the streets today. While Habré stands trial before an African court, these members of a victims’ association tell their gut-wrenching stories for the attentive, sober and sensitive camera of Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (Grigris). With this calm and poignant feature film, the Chadian filmmaker has made a powerful, humane and truly great film: one of the few that go straight to the heart.
