Homo Sapiens Nikolaus Geyrhalter

Film index A to Z

Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s films are a theatre of fascinating alchemy. Starting from meticulously composed static shots, the Austrian filmmaker creates metaphysical poems. A year after Over the Years (RIDM 2015), documenting the ordinary lives of former factory workers, Homo Sapiens presents a world devoid of human beings. Filmed all over the world, this apocalyptic ode to the power of nature explores abandoned human structures. Stadiums, churches, military bases and entire cities are explored by a camera attuned to the tragic beauty of devastated landscapes. No further information is given; we are guided only by unexpectedly dramatic editing, invited to give free rein to our own vision of the end of time.
