Jean Ziegler, the Optimism of Willpower

Swiss-German sociologist, writer and polemicist Jean Ziegler, 82, has not let old age dampen his energy or revolutionary spirit. A committed anti-capitalist since Che Guevara told him to fight “the monster” from within in Chile in 1964, he must now put his convictions to the test. On a trip to Cuba, Nicolas Wadimoff, his former student and now a filmmaker, questions him, pointedly at times, about the state of the revolutionary model, the future of his perspective and his commitment to the cause. As well as recounting Ziegler’s remarkable career, which brought him into the orbit of Kofi Annan and the Human Rights Commission, Jean Ziegler, the Optimism of Willpower is a rich, complex portrait of a man of many and fascinating contradictions.
