International Short and Medium-Length Competition

Kwassa Kwassa SUPERFLEX, Tuan Andrew Nguyen

Film index A to Z

Europa, an eastern beauty, fascinated Zeus so deeply that he turned himself into a white bull and carried her to the coast of Crete. Kwassa Kwassa enters into a bemused dialogue with the Greek myth behind Europe’s name. We are in the Comoros Islands, of which one, Mayotte, returned to France in 2014, opening a European gateway in the Indian Ocean. For residents of the neighbouring islands, the temptation is strong. On Anjouan Island, they make light rafts called Kwassa Kwassa. This beautifully filmed short (from minute observations to drone shots) documents the life of one such boat from construction to sea crossing, with a voiceover delivered in epic tones, meditating on the paradoxes of the migrant crisis and the work of the smugglers, there and elsewhere.
