International Short and Medium-Length Competition

Long Story Short Natalie Bookchin

Film index A to Z

A mosaic of portraits reveals itself on the black screen. Each person shares their own experience of unemployment and unexpected poverty in California, and talks about their isolation. Editing and split screens bring the accounts together. When they coincide, the voices prove to be voices in unison, with individual distress becoming a modern tragic chorus. In the vein of installations and inspired by discussions between YouTube users, this dynamic tableau of testimonials takes a provocative approach to representing reality, serving as a counterpoint to conventional talking heads and aimless channel surfing. The Grand Prix winner at the Cinéma du réel festival, it is a manifesto for a social cinema, both unifying and resounding.
