Occupation of Memory Jade Baxter

Film index A to Z

An abandoned building. The decaying hulk of a car. An uprooted tree. Large spaces inhabited only by the howling wind and creaking trees. A floating camera approaches, like an apparition. These ghostly scenes give us pause. All the more when we see archival footage and realize that this is the Nlaka’pamux nation, in British Columbia. Filmmaker Jade Baxter, who comes from the area, confronts us with our relationship to history in this short documentary essay that summons silhouettes of the past and shadows of the present. Through a series of questions about the essence, projection and ownership of collective memory, she contrasts the living land with an ossified colonial narrative.
