On the Edge of Life Yaser Kassab

Film index A to Z

In 2013, filmmaker Yaser Kassab and girlfriend Rima fled Syria as civil war was breaking out. Camped out in an abandoned building somewhere on the highway to Greece, Kassab filmed every nook and cranny of their new space and Rima’s stubborn silence. During Skype sessions with family back in Syria they are told terrible news and scolded for leaving. Drawing on the deep pain of having left his loved ones behind, the director creates a sorrowful love letter in images, its editing viscerally poetic, exploring a forced exile. A powerful, honest work in which Kassab enjoins us to understand people leaving their homes involuntarily, ripping up their deep roots.
