Portraits

Peter and the Farm Tony Stone

Film index A to Z

Peter is a solitary old man who spends his days with the cows, sheep and pigs on his Vermont farm. Downing one beer after another, he does the daily chores, muses on the state of the world, recalls the past and his estranged wives and children – distant, melancholy memories of happier times. Carrying on with his declining profession, with mixed rage and vigour, he stands in contrast to the bucolic landscape he inhabits. He is always on the verge of exploding. In Tony Stone’s portrait, Peter’s mingled humour and sadness make him a complex, engaging character: a hermit, artist and 60s idealist wallowing in melancholy and bitterness. At once tender and heartbreaking.
