Rat Film Theo Anthony

Film index A to Z

Baltimore is infested with rats. But who are these rats, anyway? A deliberately monotonous narrator describes the hated and prolific animal’s science and history. That’s the starting point for this dizzying film and its twisted sense of humour. Journalist and photographer Theo Anthony (making his first feature) sets out to explore the city and, more generally, the society it’s part of. As we meet some of Baltimore’s most marginal people and explore some of its least visible areas, Rat Film becomes an anthropological excursion that exposes – far beyond rats – the social inequalities that gnaw at the historic city. In the finest cinematic essay tradition, the film is both highly original in its form and incredibly rich in its content.
