Speaking Is Difficult AJ Schnack

Film index A to Z

The idea is as simple as it is powerful. Prompted by the steady stream of mass shootings in the United States, AJ Schnack responds with his own weapon: film. Speaking Is Difficult is a series of similar sequences. Against a backdrop of quiet urban scenes, an insert title lays out the facts: the place, date, number of people killed and number wounded. As the camera explores each place, we hear recordings of 911 calls. In repetitive, clinical fashion, the film recounts five years of bloodshed, including the congressional testimony of Gabrielle Giffords, the congresswoman who was shot in the head in 2011. A gut-wrenching work; unfortunately, its editing is ongoing.
