Die Geträumten

Seldom has an epistolary documentary resonated so powerfully. Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan, both major 20th century poets, shared an extensive and tortured correspondence. In the comfortable confines of Vienna’s Funkhaus, a building from the poets’ era, two actors read the famous letters. Time stands still, the words ring clear. Slowly but surely, the writers’ intense emotions inhabit the bodies and faces of the two readers, filmed in close-up. With them, we re-live the aftermath of the Second World War as a pair of young people questioning the concept of love. With extreme sensitivity, Ruth Beckermann (American Passages, RIDM 2011) adds temporal layers, both documentary and fictional, creating an archaeology of emotion.
