The Great Wall Tadhg O'Sullivan

Film index A to Z

In 1917, Franz Kafka wrote a short story called The Great Wall of China, an account of the wall’s construction. Superimposed on spectacular, skilfully distanced shots of security structures being built in Europe in reaction to the migrant crisis, the famous satirist’s words find unexpected and disturbing new relevance. As Tadhg O’Sullivan’s overhead camera probes the walls, surveillance cameras, bridges and visible borders of a continent subtly transforming itself into a fortress, Kafka’s words resonate like the echo of an endless story of power and exclusion. A powerful political essay that encourages us to rethink one of the most important issues of our time.
