The Stairs Hugh Gibson

Film index A to Z

In the Regent Park community centre, in Toronto, the social workers understand the people who come to see them, because these counsellors were, or still are, drug addicts. Taking a direct, serious approach, Hugh Gibson helps us get to know them. He focuses on three people: Marty, Roxanne and Greg, taking the time to listen to them attentively and empathetically as they talk about their past, their recent experiences, and their daily struggle to keep their footing on the slippery ground of addiction. Steering clear of stereotypes, the filmmaker creates a complex, touching portrait of the social conditions and injustices that fuel the vulnerability and distress of men and women on the margins.
