We Can't Make the Same Mistake Twice Alanis Obomsawin

Film index A to Z

Alanis Obomsawin is back with a new film documenting a tireless fighter’s historic struggle. For nearly six years, the filmmaker followed activist lawyer Cindy Blackstock’s effort to secure equality in social services for aboriginal children. The filmmaker takes us inside the labyrinthine workings of a Canadian court, where she succeeded in having a camera allowed for the first time. A major documentary driven by fervent determination, We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice denounces a horrible injustice and lifts the veil on the legal system, where every word must be fiercely defended. Without yielding to the temptation to oversimplify, the film delves into the finer points of the law, bringing us deep inside a chapter of Canadian history in the making.

Presented in collaboration with Télé-Québec, la Chaire UNESCO d'étude des fondements philosophiques de la justice et de la société démocratique and the Montreal Institute of International Studies (IEIM-UQAM), and Montréal First People Festival
