Announcement of the Brazilian and Cuban projects selected for Doc Lab Montréal

Press releases

Montreal, October 18, 2023 Forum RIDM, presented by Netflix, is pleased to announce the selection of the feature-length projects from the Brazilian and Cuban delegations that will take part in Doc Lab Montréal, a documentary talent incubator, from November 17 to 22, 2023. Forum RIDM will have the honour of welcoming Janaina Wagner and Clarissa Campolina from Brazil for their project The Bag of the Night as well as Manuel Rodríguez Yong and Yamila Marrero from Cuba for the project Mother of Ifá.

This collaboration with the Brasil CineMundi co-production market and the Nuevas Miradas section of Cuba’s Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV (EICTV) aims to foster the professional and creative development of these filmmaker-producer duos, and to stimulate cross-cultural exchanges between filmmakers and accredited market professionals. In addition to their involvement in Doc Lab Montréal, the professionals from Brazil and Cuba will take part in activities and talks held during the 19th edition of Forum RIDM.

The Bag of the Night by Janaina Wagner (Brazil)

Produced by Clarissa Campolina

With one of the highest feminicide rates in Brazil, the tiny municipality of Barcelos exists on the banks of the Rio Negro, lost amidst the idyllic landscape of the Amazon rainforest. The Bag of the Night unveils the presence of ghost women and girls who continue to inhabit this piece of land.

Mother of Ifá by Manuel Rodríguez Yong (Cuba)

Produced by Yamila Marrero

In eastern Cuba, two Ifá priestesses are determined to peacefully practise their religion, but every day they are forced to defend their right to be, exist, and express themselves as spiritual women, as they are constantly threatened by prejudice, ignorance, and the violence imposed on them by the heteropatriarchal society in which they live.

This initiative, part of the Quebec-Brazil and Quebec-Cuba cooperation programs, is made possible thanks to financial support from the Government of Quebec, the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and the Ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie.
