RIDM+ MAY

Behemoth by Zhao Liang

Thursday, May 26 at Cinéma du Parc

Montreal, Tuesday, May 10, 2016 – From January through August, the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) presents its year-round programming, including a monthly film series, RIDM+. Selected for the official competition at last year’s Venice Film Festival, and never before seen in Quebec, Behemoth by Zhao Liangwill be the next RIDM+ film, screening on Thursday, May 26 at 8 p.m. at Cinéma du Parc

The RIDM+ series is presented by Télé-Québec.

Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, Behemoth is the latest film by Zhao Liang (Crime and Punishment). The film is a poetic essay on the hellishness of Chinese industrialization. The three-part film observes, in a series of strikingly powerful shots, a devastated agricultural region, the inside of a metal foundry and the deserted streets of a manufactured town that looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie. Under the director’s unflinching gaze, workers’ faces resemble paintings, and modern China becomes a purgatory from which escape seems all but impossible. A haunting story that takes place in an all too real world.

Since 2012, the Montreal International Documentary Festival’s RIDM+ series (formerly Docville), presented on the last Thursday of every month, has given audiences the chance to see Montreal premieres of excellent documentaries that have enjoyed recent success at the world’s most prestigious festivals. In many cases, a RIDM+screening is the only chance to see the film on a big screen in Montreal, and the filmmakers often make themselves available for audience Q&A sessions.

Quebec’s only film festival dedicated to documentaries, the Montreal International Documentary Festivalpresents the best reality‐based films, including the works of established directors and new talents.

The 19th annual RIDM will take place from November 10 to 20, 2016.
