Haunted territories

Abisal Alejandro Alonso

Abyssal

Abyssal spins its hypnotic tale around the mysterious Bahia Honda lighthouse, where Raudel dismantles old boats for useful parts. In a conversation with his colleagues, the young Cuban worker tells of a mysterious, ghostly light. Is it real? What does it mean? Set against an unsettling soundtrack, with camera work that skilfully captures the play of light and dark, this documentary by filmmaker Alejandro Alonso bears witness to the overlap of different worlds and temporalities. Whether conjured up by long-buried dreams and fears, or by the defaced landscapes that humans leave behind them like scars, the ghosts that haunt us often come from within. Likewise, as this enigmatic film shows, the sea has long been both the cradle and the abyss of our collective unconscious. (Programming Collective)
