Resistance

Advocate Rachel Leah Jones, Philippe Bellaïche

Films index A to Z

For nearly 50 years, Israeli attorney Lea Tsemel has defended Palestinians – whether they are activists, terrorists or minors involved in insurrections. Like her husband, since the 1970s she has been committed to the struggle against the occupation; she chose the court system as her site of resistance. Despite hostility from the public and the media, personal sacrifices and slim odds of victory, she continues to hope that justice will one day be served. Rachel Leah Jones and Philippe Bellaïche combine archival footage and recent trials to create a fascinating portrait of a woman who retains all her tenacity and fire at the age of 73. Thanks to remarkable behind-the-scenes access to the court, they also take a hard look at a biased justice system.
