Echoes of the past

Apenas el sol Arami Ullón

The sun is the only thing the white man does not claim to own. Equipped with an old tape recorder and a sharp mind, Mateo Sobode Chiqueno records conversations with the elders of his Indigenous community, the Ayoreo. Forced out of the forests they once called home, they now live on arid land that is incompatible with their way of life. Missionaries persuaded them that their traditional songs barred them from the divine promise of paradise – although today, the Christian faith they have assimilated comes fraught with a longing for the past and the sense that they may have been swindled by the missionaries. In this powerful work, Paraguayan filmmaker Arami Ullón (El tiempo nublado, RIDM 2014) harnesses the power of documentary to reclaim agency and to amplify the voices of a people still oppressed by their colonial past.
