Becoming Isabel Vaca

Temporada de Campo

With school finished for the summer, 11-year-old Bryan can finally join his uncles on the ranch where they raise fighting bulls. From the point of view of the young Mexican cowboy, whose family situation gradually becomes clear as the film progresses, filmmaker Isabel Vaca explores the inner workings of a tough and controversial world. With rare transparency and a conscientious approach, she captures a day-to-day existence in which tenderness and brutality coexist, even in the children’s naively violent games. Becoming is interspersed with Bryan’s reflections addressed directly to the camera; this is the world through the eyes of a child who wants summer to last forever – but also for time to speed up, taking him to adulthood to join his mentors.
