Between My Flesh and the World's Fingers Talena Sanders

Film index A to Z

Taking a fresh essayistic approach built on re-enactments, archival footage, new images and superimposed text, Talena Sanders (Liahona, RIDM 2013) revives the life and work of Mary McLane, a provocative early 20th century American writer. An openly bisexual feminist who pioneered tabooshattering first-person literature, McLane also directed a film. Although it has since been lost, that film serves as a touchstone for Sanders’ fantastical re-enactments. Resituating McLane’s daring writings in present-day America, the filmmaker decontextualizes her subject’s thoughts in order to highlight their continuing relevance. The film becomes a trans-generational dialogue between two women, both committed to fighting their society’s stifling conservatism. (BD)
