Carmine Street Guitars Ron Mann

Film index A to Z

In Greenwich Village, one small business soldiers on against all odds. While the neighbourhood keeps changing under the attentions of rapacious realtors, Rick Kelly continues his painstaking life’s work. He criss-crosses New York in search of scrap wood from the city’s old buildings, lovingly turning it into his handmade guitars with help from an avid young apprentice. To judge by the famous customers who come through the doors in Ron Mann’s Carmine Street Guitars – from Jim Jarmusch to Jamie Hince of The Kills – Kelly is doing something right. Some come to buy, others to browse, but all stay to chat with a die-hard who represents a world and an ethos threatened with extinction. (BD)
