Looking for Life

When we first meet Robens and James in Chèche Lavi, the first feature by Sam Ellison, the two young Haitians are wandering aimlessly through the streets of Tijuana, hoping to receive asylum in the United States. Now inseparable, the two met after leaving home; like so many others, the 2010 earthquake drove them to seek refuge in America. Gradually, hope gives way to uncertainty, and awareness of the geopolitical impasse in which they are caught by no fault of their own, especially since the U.S. election of 2016. Through a portrait of two resilient young men whose friendship is shattered by circumstances beyond their control, Ellison delivers a poignant tribute to every exile trapped in the web of immigration policy.
