François Delisle stays with his mother during her final days in a nursing home. He transcends the ordeal with a series of still images: striking photos of fleeting but crucial moments, accompanied by the daily interactions between mother, son and caregivers. The decision not to use motion pictures spares us any degrading voyeurism; this is an essay grounded in dignity and respect, paying tribute to one woman in particular but also to the often-invisible women who work day and night to soothe the pains of age and infirmity. A poignant film whose reflection on our relationship with the elderly and the end of life is all the more disturbing given that the events of 2020 unfolded after these images were captured.
