Fall 2019. For several months, Danic Champoux filmed inside CHSLD Émilie-Gamelin in Montreal’s Centre-Sud neighbourhood. He observes, patiently and from a respectful distance, the day-to-day goings-on in the facility, focusing on the interactions – sometimes tense, sometimes silly, often touching – between the dedicated staff and the residents. Attentive to big events (the Christmas party), small gestures and long stretches of monotony, Champoux carefully composes his film as a series of vignettes. The camera doesn’t move. It immortalizes ordinary faces and activities that become, before our eyes, unforgettable symbols of supportive and caring places that are too often neglected, and sensationalized when they aren’t. A glowing and very necessary love letter. (Bruno Dequen)
