La bête humaine

Counting Tiles Cynthia Choucair

Film index A to Z

Bimchi w b'idd

Filmmaker Cynthia Choucair follows her sister and two other members of Clowns Without Borders when they return to the Greek island of Lesbos to bring some laughter to stranded refugees escaping war and poverty. Local authorities have taken control however and any evidence left of the flow of humans are the mounds of life jackets strewn about the eerily empty space and boats voguing in the distance. As they wander the roads trying to break through administrative dead ends and stony face guards, the two siblings must reminisce their own history of displacement, victims of the Lebanese War in their youth. Deeply moving and poetic, Counting Tiles’ characters desperately try to create emotional connections when the European powers that be have chosen to forego any humanity in this crisis. (SM)
