Strength of the living

Cow Andrea Arnold

Multi-award-winning fiction filmmaker Andrea Arnold presents her first documentary feature, a surprising film that sits perfectly alongside her rich filmography (Fish Tank and American Honey, among others). Focusing on one cow and her calves, the film documents the bovine life cycle on an industrial dairy farm. With a close-up approach that gets below the surface, Cow reveals the minutely regulated existence of these animals condemned to servitude and exploited for human gain. With precision and flair, the filmmaker brings out a finely tuned discourse through the power of composition, editing, and sound design, with no third-person narration. Andrea Arnold delivers a work that is confrontational without being moralistic, underpinned by a great aesthetic and emotive force. (Programming Collective)
