Portraits

Cunningham Alla Kovgan

Films index A to Z

Merce Cunningham was undoubtedly one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century. With his partner and sidekick John Cage, he revolutionized the art of dance. Using extensive archival footage of the choreographer at work, interviews and contemporary scenes of Cunningham’s last company, Alla Kovgan paints a portrait of a truly unique artistic vision, and helps us rediscover the power of Cunningham’s work. Like Wim Wenders’ Pina, Cunningham uses 3D and footage recorded in public spaces; the aim is to explore the relevance of an artistic approach that upended conventions so thoroughly that it was not widely celebrated until years later. A film as bold as its subject.
