Edna writes, with great eloquence, in her journal entitled “The Story of my Life.” She carries with her the scars of the war for the land, deep in the heart of Brazil. Her memories of survival are interwoven with the country’s history. Her gentle voice, once silenced by fear, is the guiding force of a film that blurs reality and dream. Her peaceful, almost bucolic daily life contrasts with the violent nature of her tale, and with her quest to leave this land so deeply blighted by massacres. Eryk Rocha’s earlier film Cinema Novo won the Œil d’Or (Golden Eye) award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016; with Edna, he makes his return to documentary with a chronicle—at once poetic and brutal—of a war that is far from over.
