El mar la mar Joshua Bonnetta, J.P. Sniadecki

Film index A to Z

Straddling Arizona and Mexico, the Sonora Desert is more strategic than ever before, at a time of talk of building a wall to stop migration. The desert is a dangerous natural barrier in its own right, a furnace that serves the United States policy of “prevention by dissuasion” and enables a hypocritical rejection of responsibility for the thousands who have died trying to make it across. The first collaboration between American filmmaker J.P. Sniadecki and Canadian ?Filmmaker Joshua Bonnetta, El mar la mar explores this forbidding expanse and the marks of human passage it bears. The impressive images are captured in Super 16 and accompanied by a rich soundtrack of the desert’s natural sounds and migrants’ haunted recollections. A work of great sensory power, examining one of today’s worst tragedies in highly creative ways.
