Downstream to Kinshasa
One of just three documentaries shown at Cannes this year, En route pour le milliard is also the first film from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to be an official selection at the prestigious festival. Dieudo Hamadi, a RIDM regular, turns his observant camera to one of his country’s greatest injustices. For two decades, survivors of the Six-Day War, which brought blood and fire to the city of Kisangani, have been fighting for historic recognition of the conflict, and financial reparations. The compensation is forever promised but never delivered, and the victims have now set out on a long journey down the Congo to the capital, Kinshasa, to make themselves heard. Ever compassionate and lucid, Hamadi closely follows the struggle against a moribund government. (Charlotte Selb)
