The voice is soft, the tone at times sarcastic, almost monotone, but the message is that of a fierce resister who refuses to surrender to the world’s troubles. Through a monologue connecting private life and political action past and present, the survival of Indigenous peoples and natural resource extraction, filmmaker Thirza Cuthand, of Cree and Scottish extraction, conveys an acerbic and uncompromising vision of relations between Indigenous peoples and settlers. Drawing on her own memories of discrimination, connecting the common practice of sending children to foster care and lucrative natural resource operations, Cuthand criticizes Canadian – and global – reality, while affirming her need to keep resisting the capitalist beast. A very personal and essential broadside. (Bruno Dequen)
