Galb'Echaouf
Galb’Echaouf unfolds in the Western Sahara, a region that has experienced its share of wars, leaving lasting wounds on the nomadic populations living there. Abdessamad El Montassir’s film, a mix of visual and narrative poetry, delves into the story of displacement and of amnesia generated by feelings of shame and guilt. The filmmaker, a native of the territory himself, unable to find people who are willing to freely talk about past traumas, slowly turns his focus to the non-human knowledge present in plants and landscapes instead. Stunning cinematography built around the soundscape of desert winds brings the haunted recollections of a complex socio-political history. (Programming Collective)
