Gods of Molenbeek Reetta Huhtanen

Films index A to Z

Aatos is 6. His father is Chilean, his mother Finnish. They live in the suburbs of Brussels. Not just any suburb, but the Molenbeek district, the infamous cradle of the radicalism behind several terrorist attacks in Europe. After events that reach as far as the realm of children, Aatos questions himself, looking for a god. He talks about it with his friends Amine, who is Muslim, and Flo, a committed atheist. Filmed with impressive intimacy – Reetta Huhtanen gives us the child’s-eye-view – this delicate story of everyday life takes the drama out of religious debate, while also celebrating the robustness of friendship and the beauty of innocence in troubled times.
