In these uncertain and increasingly surrealistic times, maybe we can find some meaning in the void? Finnish experimental video maker Jaakko Pallasvuo does just that with this film about holes. The off-camera narrator inspects his holey socks anxiously: how does one tear a garment authentically? Why do some people manage a perfect rip, while other holes broadcast their blatant artifice? Combining video, drawing, music and virtual reality, Hole evokes the iconic character of grunge music and fashion, the paradoxical religion of Georges Bataille, and the mineshafts that puncture the planet. Pessimistic and gleeful in equal measures, this collage delivers the irony we crave when we’re deep in the hole. (Charlotte Selb)
