Imperdonable
In a prison in El Salvador, an inmate belonging to the Barrio 18 gang serves his sentence alongside some fellow gang members. Doing time for violent crimes, he and his friends have also been found guilty by their mara of another “sin”: being gay. The extreme machismo and homophobia of the gangs are echoed by the evangelical churches that control the country’s penitentiaries. Isolated from other inmates, they find a new kind of community in their cell block. Observing the men’s gestures of solidarity and tenderness, and listening to their stories, revealing terrible inner conflict, Marlén Viñayo humanizes a difficult place, often portrayed by the media in the most sensational terms.
