After just two films, Khalik Allah emerged as a unique and compelling figure in contemporary film. His latest is a monumental work that takes the form of a feverish self-portrait. Once again employing mainly asynchronous sound, he juggles between analogue and digital, superimposing timelines and narrative layers. He returns to the same Harlem intersection he immortalized previously, meeting some of his protagonists again, along with some new faces. He reflects on his artistic practice and his relationships with religion, racism, history, sex, nutrition and his Italian girlfriend. This dense and striking epic film, taking the form of a waking dream, firmly establishes the uncompromising vision of an artist for whom filming is as essential as breathing.
