In search of oneself

Kevin Joana Oliveira

Kevin

This hybrid film imbued with sensitivity highlights the beautiful friendship between Brazilian filmmaker Joana Oliveira and a Ugandan woman, Kevin Adwenko. After studying together in Germany, each returned to her home country. They kept in touch from afar over the course of two decades, until Joana, struggling through a tough time, decided to cross the ocean in search of comfort from her friend. The relationship between the two women transcends their different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, while exposing their intersectionality. Through intimate discussions about topics such as white privilege and the violence of structural racism, the film contributes to deconstructing the colonizing and ethnographic gaze toward Africa.
