L' Apollon de Gaza Nicolas Wadimoff

Film index A to Z

The Apollo of Gaza

In August 2013, an ancient statue of Apollo was found in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Gaza. A few days later, the treasure disappeared. As filmmaker Nicolas Wadimoff combs the streets of Gaza and Jerusalem, he and his attentive camera take on a detective’s role. Examining faces and recording contradictory accounts, the investigation reveals not only each person’s ambitions and beliefs, but the complexities of a delicate region whose tensions seem to be laid bare by the archaeological incident. Whether it’s a hoax or a national treasure, the Apollo of Gaza gives the filmmaker a starting point for a fascinating meditation on the importance of cultural heritage and its role in a nation’s affirmation – or its negation.
