Gestures of resistance

La opción cero Marcel Beltrán

Option zéro

Migration from Cuba to the United States is most often by sea, to Florida. There are, however, other routes, including one that starts with a plane ride to Guyana, a country situated in the opposite direction, in the north of South America. In collaboration with refugees in a camp in Panama, Cuban documentary filmmaker Marcel Beltrán recounts their perilous journeys. Thanks to impressive editing, La opción céro alternates between images shot by the filmmaker and videos filmed using the cell phones of the Cuban migrants, who felt they had no choice but to accept an uncertain exile. The disparities between the two visual registers make their struggle almost palpable, and the film paints an unconventional and moving portrait of the refugee experience. (Programming Collective)
