Laila at the Bridge Elizabeth Mirzaei, Gulistan Mirzaei

Film index A to Z

Laila Haidari isn’t afraid. Married at 12 to a man much older than her while an Afghan refugee in Iran, she divorces at 21 and returns to Kabul. Now established in the capital, she ventures every day to a bridge that shelters hundreds of heroin addicts, calling out to each man to convince as many as she can to enter the narcotics rehab program she created. To fund it, she runs a restaurant and when Taliban attacks threaten that livelihood, she marches to officials and onto TV sets, facing incredulous male dominated stares, to demand funding for her program and an end to Afghanistan’s rampant corruption. Filmmaking duo Elizabeth and Gulistan Mirzaei follow this unstoppable intrepid woman, determined to cure a desperate generation of men lost in the geopolitics of war and to live a life of her own.
