Song of a Seer

In this intimate portrait, the Haitian poet, art critic and actor Dominique Batraville reveals himself in his bedroom/library. The confined space, narrow as a closet and stuffed with books and manuscripts, contrasts with the artist’s profoundly free thoughts. This is no standard interview: the film emerges as a dreamer’s monologue made of poems, reminiscences, myths and songs, embodying the remarkable richness of the Caribbean imagination with tender melancholy. While the camera never strays from the small room, the microphone admits the sounds of bustling Port-au-Prince, the harbour for this “seer/traveller” who is always expected somewhere. His wanderings are both intimate and infinite, transporting us beyond concrete walls and stacks of paper.
