The Forbidden Reel
This film by Afghan-Canadian director Ariel Nasr is the story of a miracle triggered by an important rediscovery. While countless Afghan cultural artifacts have been destroyed during the country’s relentless wars, the passionate and brave artists of Afghan Film, an organization founded in 1968, have managed to preserve a large part of the country’s cinematic heritage. Combining recent interviews and many excerpts from films, Nasr salutes those who have helped his country’s cultural memory survive. In the process he reveals a little-known slice of cinematic history that allows us to better grasp Afghanistan’s trajectory in the 20th century. An essential historical documentary. (Bruno Dequen)
