Although they’ve received less coverage than fellow Westerners who joined the Islamic State, many have volunteered in recent years to fight alongside the Kurds. Julien Fréchette interviewed four of the fighters – three men and one woman – at length before their departure, during their time at the front and after their return home. We learn what drove them to leave their ordinary lives for someone else’s country and cause; through the conversations, complex feelings and motivations emerge, whether altruistic or egotistical.
