The State of the World

Midnight Family Luke Lorentzen

Films index A to Z

Fewer than 45 public ambulances serve the 9 million residents of Mexico City. To fill the void, numerous private “family businesses” offer their services to those in need. Monitoring emergency radio frequencies 24/7, the Ochoa family crosses the city at high speed to be the first on the latest crime or accident scene. They brave traffic jams, police corruption and fierce competition to make a living in their cutthroat business. With heartstopping camera work immersing us in the Ochoas’ frenetic nights, Midnight Family follows the life-saving and at times ethically dubious work of the father and his two children, who are doing whatever they can to make a living from a deficient healthcare system.
